Foundations could be damaged by the extent to which clays expand with increased moisture and contract under dry conditions. A tube sample of the clay on site is taken and tested in the laboratory in order to measure the Shrink / Swell characteristics of the clay. This and other tests can be used in the process of Site Classification. Thus a foundation design can be selected that is suitable for such conditions.
